The Dōjō

The Bujinkan Budō Taijutsu Kaeru Dōjō is a martial arts dōjō in Torquay, Devon, UK, which trains in the Bujinkan Budō Taijutsu as created by Hatsumi Masaaki Sōke in 1972. Previously, the art was known as Togakure Ryū Ninjutsu, simply Ninjutsu, or Bujinkan Ninpō Taijutsu.

The aim of the dōjō is for the Sensei (teachers – literally “one who has gone before”), Senpai (honoured higher rank students), and Kohei (lower rank students) to improve themselves in multiple facets; physically, mentally, and intellectually. This includes a mixture of Taijutsu (hand-to-hand/unarmed skills), Bukijutsu (weapon skills), and philosophy.

Like the Japanese frog for which the dōjō is named, individuals studying with the Kaeru Dōjō will seek to change for the better, to improve. To do this Kaeru Dōjō will return to the sources of the martial arts to learn the lessons passed down from antiquity and look at how the lessons can apply to modern day situations.

In Japanese, the word kaeru can also be used to mean “to return home” as well as “to be accepted by feeling welcome in a place”, both of which factor into the training of the dōjō as we seek to make all feel welcome and safe to challenge and improve their selves.

1-to-1 Training

As well as group sessions, the Kaeru Dōjō also offers 1-to-1 training with our qualified and experienced instructors (sensei) in all of the skills found in the system and syllabus.

The cost of 1-to-1 sessions is worked out upon request and by arrangement.

Weekly Classes

Every Wednesday we train as a dōjō group to learn and practice the various skills found within the system and the syllabus together. This is the best way to learn the skills of the art, with qualified and experienced instructors (sensei) and a group of like-minded individuals.

Lessons cost £10 per session or £30 for a month paid up front.

Official Grading

Kaeru Dōjō is the only place in Devon and Cornwall to get official gradings within the Bujinkan organisation through qualified instructors (Sensei) alongside Dōjō rank.

These ranks can be made official by sending off to the Bujinkan Honbu, which will come back as official certificates.
